Crockpot Paleo BBQ Chicken Wings

Ok, so this was a no-brainer. It was Sunday. My hubby had just molded himself into the couch cushions for an afternoon of football when he asked, “What’s for dinner?”

I’d had a long week, so I was very tempted to tell him dinner would be whatever he wanted to get off his lazy butt and make. But, I decided to give the poor guy a break. Still, I didn’t have it in me to bust out a gourmet paleo meal today.

What saves me on days like these is my crockpot. You’ve heard me say it before – you need to make one of these little plug-in wonders your paleo cooking buddy. It will make your life so much easier.

So out came the crockpot…and some chicken wings. First I broiled the wings for a few minutes on each side and then tossed them into a little pool of sauce in the crockpot. Lid on, timer set to 5 hours, and like I always say, that’s how it’s done!

I used my own BBQ sauce recipe for these paleo chicken wings, but choose whatever kind of you like. I also added a little of Franks Red Hot Wings sauce to take the heat up a bit. Then I just let everything simmer on low for about 5 hrs. It’s one of the easiest meals to make. And the best part, these juicy chicken wings come out of the tub infused with all kinds of tangy, slow-cooked BBQ flavor! Delish!

When my boys come home for the holidays, this will definitely be on the menu. Serve your paleo wings with carrots, celery, and a side of sweet potato fries, and you’re good to go!

Easy-peasy. Winner, winner chicken dinner!

Or something like that. :)

Enjoy!

Crockpot Paleo BBQ Chicken Wings Recipe

by Trina
Simple paleo crockpot or slowcooker recipe for barbeque chicken wings — broil wings first, then let simmer in the barbeque sauce. Easy!
Course Appetizer, Entree
Cuisine American

Ingredients

  • 2 – 2 1/2 lbs uncooked chicken wings & drumettes
  • salt, pepper, olive oil (as needed – see directions below)
  • 1 – 1 1/2 cups barbeque sauce (your choice, or see our recipe linked below)
  • 2 – 4 tbsp Frank's Red Hot Wing Sauce (for added spiciness, if desired)

Instructions

  • Turn on your oven’s broiler
  • Plug in your crockpot and set to low
  • Salt and pepper all wings, then lightly coat them with olive oil
  • Line a cookie sheet with foil and place something like a cooling rack or two on the cookie sheet. Place chicken on the cookie sheet racks, and slide the cookie sheet onto the top rack of your oven
  • Broil chicken about 5 minutes on each side (this is just to crisp the crust a little, not to brown the chicken)
  • Remove chicken from oven and place in crockpot with barbeque sauce and Franks Sauce, and cook on low for about 5-6 hours
  • Serve hot and enjoy!

  1. Wait… How are these paleo? You’re using BBQ sauce and processed hot sauce…

    1. Dee, the BBQ sauce is my own and made from scratch with all paleo ingredients. The hot sauce is Franks and is used by many Paleo people because the ingredients are cayenne, vinegar, water, salt and garlic powder. You can make you own if you like, but I like the ease of having it ready in the fridge.

  2. My chicken wings did not dry out like yours look. Any tips?
Sue (Australian football season starting soon!)

    1. In the crock pot it can be a bit more difficult. I would suggest the Chipotole wings or Asian wings. Or you can use the same method by seasoning your wings and baking then, then adding bbq sauce at the end. That way they are crispy, but have the nice bbq flavor.

  3. Found this recipe on google. Just tried it and well FINGER LICKIN’ GOOD! I will never cook chicken wings in the oven again :D

Thanks! Also tried the tangy BBQ sauce with it but changed it a bit to my liking, absolutely amazing. <3

    1. Thank you Michelle! I love hearing you like the recipe. I also am so happy when people tell they adapted a recipe to their taste. Thats my goal! I expect and hope everyone does the same so they will make my recipes over and over again. Thank you so much for your comment!

  4. How many does this serve? Is there a sauce you would recommend?

    1. You can use any bbq sauce you like. We have one on our site that’s awesome. It serves 2-3. :)

  5. Do you think it would be just as good with boneless, skinless chicken breasts or would they be too dry? I am hungry for BBQ but need something super simple today! They sound delish!!!

    1. I think they would be fine with chicken breasts. Maybe it would be best shredded so the meat can simmer in the sauce once the chicken is cooked.

  6. What BBQ sauce recipe do you like to use??

    1. I use my own zest tang bbq sauce. You can spice it up any way you like.

  7. Can you cook on medium or high and shorten the cook time?

  8. I google searched crockpot chicken wing recipes and found your recipe. I was very excited to find your paleo recipe. Now that my husband is diabetic, I’m looking to eliminate sugars from our family diet for dinners. This is a double score! Great taste and a healthier option than bottled BBQ sauce. Thank you and I look forward to trying more of your recipes.

  9. Looks good, Mom! I can’t wait to try some of the new recipes when I come to visit. Fair warning: be prepared to go through a few extra pounds of those wings while Kevin and I are there ;)

    1. Ry, you know I got you covered! I will make you both lots of Paleo goodness when you’re home for the holidays! …..For all of you that may not know, I’m the proud mom of 21 yr old twin boys. Who I love to the moon because they will eat ANYTHING their mama cooks! :)
