The Ugly Truth About Our Beauty Products

As you’ve probably guessed, today’s post isn’t about a new paleo recipe…

But keep those measuring cups and mixing bowls handy – I’ll be putting up a brand-new paleo dish tomorrow I think you’re going to like!

This time I want to share something a little different with you. It’s an important topic that was a real eye-opener for me as I’m sure it will be for you too.

So for today’s special post, we’re going to step away from the kitchen counter and take a good look at what’s on your bathroom counter.

Let me start by asking you a question: Do you know what exactly is in your cosmetics? How about your shampoo? Your body lotion? Your deodorant?

Most people don’t have a clue. And honestly, they don’t really care. That was pretty much me too. As long as the products I bought did what they were supposed to and I didn’t break out in a rash, I was happy.

So here’s what I found out some time ago that completely changed my mind…

Almost all personal care products in the U.S. – from mascara to baby shampoo – are loaded with tons of chemicals that have never been fully tested for safety.

Here’s why that’s a big problem: Your skin absorbs up to 60% of whatever you put on it in less than 60 seconds. [av_sidebar widget_area=’Lockerdome’ av_uid=’av-1by4661′]

So when you consider most women use between 12 and 20 personal care products just about every day…sometimes twice or more a day…pretty close to 365 days a year…that’s a whole lot of chemicals your body is absorbing over time. If you have kids at home, they’re like little sponges too.

Now I hope the leading brands aren’t knowingly trying to poison us (that would be really bad for customer retention) but it does make you wonder.

Over in Europe, they’ve banned or restricted more than 1,300 potentially dangerous ingredients in their personal care products including chemicals suspected of being carcinogenic or neurotoxic.

Would you like to guess how many chemicals are banned from personal care products here in the U.S.? That would be a grand total of 11.

So that means all but a tiny fraction of the estimated 10,000 most commonly used ingredients in personal care product are allowed to go into our bottles and tubes with the FDA’s full blessing – including lead and formaldehyde.

And even if you knew which which ones were the worst, there would be no point trying to find them on your consealer’s ingredients label. That’s because the beauty industry isn’t required to list them all!

Meanwhile, here are a few more facts you should consider…

…today more women than ever before are being diagnosed with breast cancer…

…kids suffering with autism, ADHD, asthma and allergies are on the rise…

…many babies are routinely born with more than 200 chemicals in their umbilical cord blood!

I’m not saying this is all a result of your lip gloss, but it is something to think about.

So the whole purpose of this post isn’t to scare you away from soaping up in the shower or using a moisturizer.

I just want you to know that if you’re fully committed to keeping your family healthy and safe from head to toe like me, there are alternatives out there to the big-name chemical-laced potions that work just as well.

Beautycounter products
“Beautycounter’s cleansers and moisturizers feel luxurious and indulgent, but are streamlined to eliminate anything potentially harmful…” – Vogue Magazine

One source I really want to introduce you to today is Beautycounter.

I first heard about Beautycounter from a friend and decided to take a closer look. I had been searching for a good personal care line I could trust for the past few years now.

And in all that time, I’ve never heard a company use the word “safe” in their product descriptions before. But it was front and center on everything Beautycounter’s made: “Every ingredient selected for safety.”

lipstick-on-makeup-zipper-case-750x675I’ve since learned that not only are their products just as effective as the big name brands, they have a list of over 1,500 questionable ingredients they promise will never go into their personal care products.

I’ve been buying and trying Beautycounter products for awhile now, and have been so impressed that (full disclosure here!) I recently became a Beautycounter consultant.

(Check out the brief Beautycounter video right below this post if you’d like to learn more…)

I know this post has grown really long, so here’s the bottom line: what you’re putting on your body matters just as much as what you’re putting in it.

If you want to check out Beautycounter that’s great. But what I really hope is that from now on you’ll consider what may be hiding in your personal care products and start looking at healthier alternatives.

In fact, you could make your first change today by simply switching to castile soap for your bath – it’s a whole lot safer and available just about everywhere.

I’ll have more to tell you about Beautycounter in future posts and emails because I’m a such a big believer in the safety and effectiveness of this new brand – but that’s more than enough for one day.

In the meantime, stay safe and healthy out there…and look for many more new and delicious paleo recipes coming your way soon!
