Experts say the detox industry needs to come clean and admit their products – ranging from tea leaves to colonic irrigations – are closer to scams than real antidotes for lifestyle poisons such as fast food and hard partying.
Detoxification products do seem to be good at cleaning up on profits, thanks to celebrity endorsers from Gwyneth Paltrow to Oprah Winfrey now putting their star-power behind some of the best-selling detox brands.
There is no magical rinse and repeat formula for getting your body’s organs squeaky clean according to a recent quote from Edzard Ernst of Exeter University in The Guardian: “The healthy body has kidneys, a liver, skin, even lungs that are detoxifying as we speak. There is no known way – certainly not through detox treatments – to make something that works perfectly well in a healthy body work better,” Ernst says.
