So where did I get the idea to add cherries to a paleo barbecue sauce? Glad you asked! When I was growing up in the Northwest, we had a huge family gathering in our backyard every 4th of July. And…we had a big cherry tree back there too. So while the watermelon was chilling in the creek that ran beside our house, it was my patriotic duty to scamper up that cherry tree and pluck as many cherries as my little fingers could grab. Sometimes those cherries would wind up on top of the hand-cranked ice cream Dad would churn out, or just become part of the fresh fruit smorgasbord on our picnic table.
So this cherry-infused barbecue sauce is part tribute to simpler times and the innocence of youth. And the other part is I just wanted a really good barbecue sauce!
The next thing I’m going to make with this one is barbecued chicken breasts. After that, maybe I’ll work it into my next beef or turkey burger.
