Here’s a quick and easy non-dairy frozen treat to make over the weekend. Your kids or significant other will love you just a little bit more if you churn out this creamy delight…
Anyone who reads my posts has to know by now I’m kind of an ice cream freak. It’s not that I eat it all the time. And the only kind I indulge in now is the all-natural, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free kind.
But whenever I’m craving a special treat, chances are you’ll find me rooting through the freezer searching for the last remaining scoops of one of my frozen concoctions.
Luckily, I make my homemade paleo ice cream in pretty small batches – a pint or so at a time. That way it doesn’t hang around long enough to get me into too much trouble.
I have made pumpkin pie, strawberry-banana, cherry-chocolate-chip, and banana-nut paleo-style ice creams.
Today though, I was craving a little chocolate.
And for me, putting chocolate and almond nut butter together is a no-brainer.
Remember those commercials from years ago? “Hey, you got your chocolate in my peanut butter! No, you got your peanut butter in my chocolate!” That’s right, Reese’s peanut butter cups!
This chocolate and nut butter ice cream recipe reminds me of those. This one is that good!
I just made it up on the fly and really like it! It only takes a few ingredients and is so easy to whip up, you really have no excuse not to give it a try!
So plug in that ice cream maker and watch your family line up for this one. Do it now, while it’s still summer! :)
Paleo Chocolate & “Peanut Butter” Ice Cream Recipe
- 1 can full-fat coconut milk
- 1/4 cup raw honey
- 1/4 cup almond butter
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- Add all above ingredients in a blender to combine. Mix in blender for about 1 minute
- Pour into electric ice cream maker
- Takes about 20-25 minutes to churn before it’s ready to eat (or freeze for later)
- Makes about 1 pint
- Yum. Paleo ice cream time!
- Recipe can be easily doubled.
- Note: If you freeze coconut ice cream it will be rock hard because there are no preservatives to keep it soft. You can let it sit out for about 20 minutes before serving, or microwave for about 20-30 seconds to soften
Hi How many servings does this normally make?
Bailey, It makes a little over a pint. I try to keep treats on the small side or I get myself in trouble. :)
How could I eliminate the almond butter to have just a chocolate flavor? thanks!
Sherrie, just leave it out. It will be fine.
How many calories does this have all up in really looking for something dairy gluten free and low calorie/ fat content due to my diet :) thankyou your recipies are amazing
Hi Reena, thanks so much for the nice compliment! We don’t count calories for our recipes – most paleo followers don’t. But I can tell you any of my paleo ice cream recipes (they’re all dairy-free and gluten-free by the way) would have a fairly high fat content (healthy fats from coconut) but may not be suitable for your particular diet.
Could you add half coconut milk and half almond milk?
Sally, i don’t see why not. It will probably be less creamy, but I’m sure it will work.
Thank you so much for posting this recipe! This was awesome! The second time around I threw in a banana for fun. So simple and delicious for even non-paleo friends.
LOVE this ice cream!! Thank you for the recipe!
I’m glad you like it Lisa! It’s one of my faves too! :)
This is my absolute favourite to make and like you said I don’t make too much because otherwise I eat it all!!
Hi Amanda! Haha, its so yummy, it could be dangerous if you made more, right? I’m so glad you like it. I make it every now and then and just have a little bit at a time to make me feel satisfied, knowing it’s better than anything I can buy at the grocery store. Thanks for your comment. I truly appreciate it. :)
Just wanted to find out how big the can of coconut milk you use is?
13.5 oz. I don’t usually make ice-cream in big quantities because I end up eating it all. :)
This is great! I love making my own desert. I have to try this. Thanks for sharing.
It’s awesome! I hope you like it!
We are fairly new to the Paleo diet just 5 weeks in but so far my husband has lost 13 pounds and I have lost 7 plus we feel GREAT! My husband keeps kidding about going to Marble Slab so I know he is missing ice cream. Being a devout coconut hater has made Paleo a bit hard for a lot of recipes but I keep searching. Can you taste coconut in the ice cream?
Well, I’m so used to coconut ice cream I can’t say. But, I will tell you my husband is NOT a fan of coconut but loves this ice cream. I think it’s worth a try. I think there might be faint coconut flavor in the background but the nut butter and chocolate over power it. Let me know. Good luck. :)
What kind of almond butter did you use?
Hi Holly…I used MaraNatha No-Stir Almond Butter we picked up at Sam’s Club…it’s one of the more affordable brands I’ve found out there. But any other almond butter brand should work. You might want to compare labels for sugar content, ideally you want to keep that as low as possible.
is there a way to make this without an ice cream maker?
I’ve only made it with an ice cream maker. But several people have told me if you mix all the ingredients in a bowl and place it in the freezer, stirring about every 15 min, you can make it that way. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!
