Soy-free Paleo Teriyaki Sauce

One of the flavors I missed most when I switched to paleo a year and a half ago was teriyaki sauce. I love Asian food and I thought if I could find a good soy-free and gluten-free teriyaki recipe, I could use it to liven up a bunch of different paleo dishes…

The few I found searching online were okay, but I decided to give it a whirl myself. This teriyaki recipe was one of the very first paleo recipes I came up with, and it’s the one that got me thinking about starting a paleo foodie blog.

So I think it’s high time this paleo teriyaki recipe got some love with its own post. It really is that good and I know you’ll use it over and over again.

Top chefs will tell you taking a little extra time to whip up a good sauce can really enhance the flavor of your dishes. That’s so true…a spoonful of the right sauce (like this one!) can make a world of difference in your paleo cooking. [av_sidebar widget_area=’Lockerdome’ av_uid=’av-43q793′]

I’ve had several people tell me paleo sauces can be a bit intimidating. Well some are a little tricky to pull off. But not this one – it’s super-simple, I promise.

I even made a little video with this post to show you just how quick and easy this paleo teriyaki sauce is to whip up!

Tomorrow I’ll post the recipe for the teriyaki burger we used as an example in the video. The bad boy burgers we made are incredibly good – you’ll definitely want to check out that recipe tomorrow.

So take a look at this sauce recipe and check out the video on how to make it below. I’m still trying to figure out how to talk staring into a camera lens, so please bear with me – but I think you’ll get the message. And that message is, make this one now! Tangy and sweet with just a little heat. You’ll love it!

Let me know how you use this teriyaki sauce recipe in your own paleo cooking! I’d love to hear your ideas!

Has become one of my go to sauces for dinner. I put it over spaghetti squash and stir-fry veggies and it’s amazing. I’ve left out the rice vinegar and honey and it was still great! Thank you for sharing this receipe.

    1. I’m glad you like it Kristina! Thank you!:)

  2. What about the rice vinegar in it…not really Paleo what can you use instead

    1. Cindy, If you prefer you can use apple cider vinegar, but you will lose some of the Asian flavor.

    2. Not sure I’m doing this question right, but if you use the arrowroot, when is it put in (while cooking or after)?

      1. Right at the end of cooking.:)

  3. OMG this sauce is everything! I was craving chicken and broccoli from my favorite chinese place and instead searched for paleo teriyaki sauce and voila! Best addition to my recipe box, I want to put it on everything! Thank you for helping me solve my craving :)

  4. Andy Gilson says:

Do you think this would work in the crockpot with chicken breasts?

    1. Yes, once they are cooked through, break apart with a fork and let them cook in the sauce for a bit more. :)

  5. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! My whole family consisting of hubby and 2 boys 17 & 19 have requested to have teriyaki chicken once a week….easy for me! Thank you! It’s healthy, has amazing flavor and works well to make more than one batch at once for freezing, which I do whenever I make it! This recipe is spot on to a true, rich, flavorful teriyaki sauce and everyone should give it a try! Homemade is the way to go especially with a sauce this fabulous!! Thanks again!

    1. Holly Thank you! It was one of my first sauces and still one of my favs! I’m so happy your family enjoys it as well! :)

I am making this to marinate my Cornish game hens and then we are going to BBQ them! My family and I love all your recipes!

    1. Thank you! That sounds delicious!

  7. I grabbed this recipe tonight, to go with my big bag of Kirkland stir fry veggies, and it was perfect! I halved it, mixed it in a bowl, and poured it over the veggies that were mostly cooked. I had sausage in it too, and probably should have done chicken or fish, but just poured the cold mix over it all, and whammo! Everyone liked it, and agreed that next time Mom should use a different meat! Oh, and I didn’t have oranges, so I used a lemon, and it was perfect! Thanks!

    1. Way to improvise there Melissa! Sounds great to me and I’m glad the family enjoyed it as well! :)

  8. Hi Trina, just found out in addition to soy allergy (which made me search for this recipe) I also can’t have coconut :( :( is there a substitute for the coconut aminos?

    1. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/soy-sauce-substitute/ I found this online. It sounds like it might work for you. Let me know. :)

      1. That looks awesome thanks so much!!

  9. Trina, I just found this page. I have been PALEO for about 6months. Really on&off, more on than off. Since I lost my job in October it’s been a struggle staying paleo. But, I’m back and doing great. I am so thrilled about this teriyaki recipe. I will be making it this week.

    1. Darleen, Hi! I’m so glad you found us! I love this recipe and use it all the time! I hope you enjoy as well. Let me know! :)

  10. Thought I would tell u that this is my base recipe for teriyaki sauce now! I’ve made it multiple times, and do it a little different each time. It’s great with Stevia drops, honey, molasses… Pretty much everything! But your base recipe is amazing! So thank you!

    1. Thank YOU for letting me know you like the sauce! It’s one of my favorite recipes too! :)

I’m a Paleo Newbie. This recipe is fantastic! It has taken fairly dull meals to a whole new level. I sauteed thinly sliced strips of boneless pork chops with green and red bell peppers, mushrooms and an onion. Once again Fantastic!

    1. Hi Chuck! Thank so much. I try really hard to bring flavor to paleo dishes to help keep Newbies on track. I figure if it tastes great, you will be excited to continue your paleo journey. Thank you so much for your comment! The possibilities with this sauce are endless. enjoy! :)

  12. Jeannie Bennett says:

Wondering if this teriyaki sauce will keep in the refrigerator or freezer for awhile as there are just two of us and I wouldn’t use the whole amount for one meal.

    1. I think it would last a least a week or two. And as for freezing, I think that would work out fine too. However I have never tried it, so if you do let me know how it goes. :)

      1. I am going to try this. Jeannie B: whenever I make a marinade, I use it to marinate a greater quantity of meat. I let it marinate for a couple of hours and then I freeze the meat in the marinade in “meal” quantities. I don’t have to worry about throwing away sauce and when you thaw the meat, it continues marinating until you cook it. Makes for a super easy supper.
